Some of the Pharisees asked, “Why are you doing what is unlawful on the Sabbath?”. – Luke 6:2

By Mr. Valentine

WORK AND SABBATH

When the religious leaders raised the issue of fasting with Jesus and His disciples, it was more to show where they lacked spiritually but the matter of the Sabbath was different.  This was a matter of the law and it was a non-negotiable matter.  They therefore raised the matter of the Sabbath repeatedly with Jesus (Lk 6:7-9/Matt 12:2/Mk 2:24/Jn 5:9-11/Jn 5:16/Jn 9:14-16) .

They questioned, if Jesus was from God? (Jn 9:16) and they sought to kill Him, since they were convinced, by their understanding that Jesus was not keeping the Sabbath (Jn 5:16) .

What was the basis of their thinking?  The command of God regarding Sabbath is given in Ex 35:2 .  This command came from the teaching on the Sabbath given in Ex 20:8-11 .

The first lesson that we learn in this teaching is that the Sabbath must be separated from work (Ex 20:8) but work must always be considered alongside with the Sabbath.  Six days Man must work (Ex 20:9) .

Work is a command from God.  We work not for ourselves but because it is a command of God to obey.  Work is for everyone, young and old.  At the different times in our life, we must work on things that God has assigned for us to do.  As students we must do the work of studies as it is a command of God to obey.

There is no anxiety and fear when we work to obey God?

“Sabbath must be seperated from work but work must always be considered alongside with the sabbath. Six days Man must work.”

Thought to ponderThose who are experiencing work related stress are obviously not enjoying the meaning and purpose of work
