HEAVENLY WISDOM

Devotionals

JAMES 3 : 1, 17-18

The search for a man with heavenly wisdom begins with a question: "Who is wise and understanding among you? By his ‘good conduct let him show’ his works in the meekness of wisdom."

There is no one in this world who doesn’t want to be called wise. Don't you? Scriptures teach us two kind of wisdom: 1. Heavenly Wisdom and 2. Earthly Wisdom. As Christians, how can we show ourselves to be truly wise?

While the Fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom - Heavenly Wisdom but this wisdom has qualities of it’s own. So, let’s try to understand what this wisdom is all about and how can we show ourselves to be a truly wise man.

If we can decode the the meaning of the three key words, we can have a better understan-ding on Heavenly Wisdom.

1. Knowledge: Knowledge is the collection of information.

2. Understanding: And understanding is the correct interpretation of the knowledge (collected information).

3. Wisdom: What is Wisdom then? Wisdom is the correct application of the correctly interpreted knowledge. So now we understand what wisdom is! Wisdom is not just about what we know, it is not how much we understand but rather, it is about whether we are correctly applying what we do know and understand. It is the right application. Therefore, God’s or Heavenly Wisdom is the right application of His divine counsel in our life.

James helps us understand that Heavenly wisdom is not a head knowledge but a knowledge that drives our our actions, our life everyday. God’s wisdom can be seen and shown in the way we live our life daily. We are called to live as wise and not as fools” (Eph 3:15). If anyone lives as a wise man, he can be known through his good conduct. We can live our life either of the way. We know the parable of the rich foolish man.

God's Word is the standard for our life, a powerful reference point to assess ourselves. Let’s try a quick self-assessment whether we are really living by Heavenly Wisdom or Earthly Wisdom. God’s Wisdom are as follows:

1. Pure: The opposite of purity here is carnality. Are we living a diluted and sinful life

2. Peaceable: Do we have peace governing our every action or are we always bitter, criticizing & fighting?

3. Gentle: Are we kind & patient towards other or quickly resort to action in our words, thoughts and action?

4. Willing to yield: Are we submissive and not arrogant; willing to obey, especially in things that are true.

5. Full of Mercy and Good Fruits: Are we quick to penalize people of their wrongs? Are we nice to them in-spite of their mistakes?

6. Without Partiality: Are we biased and do we play favorites, especially at the cost of others?

7. Without Hypocrisy: Are we good actors in pretending? Are our smile, appreciation, affirmation sincere and honest?

If we are daily living out these seven qualities, we are truly wise.

Prayer: God our Heavenly Father please help us to live by this wisdom everyday. In Jesus name. Amen
