“And on the seventh day God finished his work that he had done, and He RESTED on the seventh day from all his work that he had done. So God BLESSED the seventh day and MADE IT HOLY, because on it God RESTED from all his work that he had done in creation.” – Genesis 2:2-3
“And on the seventh day God finished his work that he had done, and he rested on the seventh day from all his work that he had done. So God BLESSED the seventh day and MADE IT HOLY, because on it God RESTED from all his work that he had done in creation..”
After having finished the work of creation, God RESTED. The word rested comes from the Hebrew word “šâḇaṯ.”
It is so easy to lose sight of the Truth when we are not seeking for it. God’s Word tells us, “God RESTED on the seventh day.” Many have been holding on to the seventh day, while completely missing the point, that is, God’s Rest. When we miss out on God’s rest, we live a restless life. Let’s not miss the point, God’s rested, and that rest was made for you and me.
“He said to them, “The Sabbath was made for man, and not man for the Sabbath.” – Mark 2:27.
Seventh day would be an empty day, if God had not rested on it. So, what makes the seventh day so special is “God’s rest.” But when God rested, He did something unusual with the seventh day: God Blessed the seventh day and made it Holy. We don’t read God doing this with the other six days.
We wonder why God Blessed the seventh day and made it Holy? God placed blessing over the seventh day and made it holy for two reason.
Firstly, God’s rest is a blessing and was meant to be a blessing to Adam (man). Israel, who were given the sabbath rest, were to observe in order to find and experience that same rest which God had in the beginning. They were to end their own work in six days to enter God’s rest.
Secondly, God is Holy, His rest is Holy too. It is uncommon and so unique. You won’t get it in the market of religions. God has a monopoly over this rest, and only those who finds Jesus will find the holy rest.
But sabbath observance was only a shadow but Christ Jesus is the substance, the reality of it.
“So let no one judge you in food or in drink, or regarding a festival or a new moon or SABBATHS, which are a SHADOW of things to come, but the substance is of Christ.” – Col 2:16-17
Christ Jesus is the reality and the fulfillment of God’s rest. We need to rest in Christ Jesus to find true rest to gather in fresh strength, wisdom, guidance, motivation, freedom and spiritual revival. He who waits upon the Lord shall renew His strength.
“Rest time is not waste time. It is economy to gather fresh strength… It is wisdom to take occasional furlough. In the long run, we shall do more by sometimes doing less”
– Charles Spurgeion
Prayer: Dear Lord Jesus, I come to you for true rest. I choose to rest in you and wait upon your strength. Revive me O’ Lord. Amen
